The farmhouse-style staple is as popular as ever! If you don't have one in your own home, you've surely been inside the home of a friend or business that has one. And you know what? No wonder. These doors are charming and super functional, too. Enjoy some inspiration for what a barn door could do for you!

You might be wondering: Can anyone have a barn door?

The answer is YES...if you have the wall space. Plan for enough space to accommodate the width of the door when it’s fully open plus at least 6 inches of clearance between the door and the ceiling to hang the track system. Remember, the door should be bigger than the doorway — an extra inch above and 2 inches on either side. Since barn doors don’t seal openings like regular doors do, they’re not ideal for a hallway bathroom, for privacy’s sake.

Designer Secrets for an Instagram-Worthy Home

Thousands of people have built a following on Instagram for their curated spaces that look like they were ripped from the pages of a home magazine. With eclectic-yet-cohesive accessories, statement pieces of furniture, and ideal lighting conditions, it’s hard to believe these rooms weren’t styled and shot by a professional, but the truth is, many of these #homestagramers aren’t interior designers or photographers—and you don’t have to be either. Here, Kari Michael of Kariel Staging & Decor reveals that getting the perfect picture for the ’gram comes down to a couple of simple tips.

1. Separate Instagram from reality.

“So often, how we live is not how it’s going to be presented online,” says Michael. Don’t hesitate to rearrange furniture and décor—like hiding the TV, bringing in a chair or accessory from another room—to get the perfect shot.

2. Maintain an open floor plan.

It feels natural to angle your furniture toward a central object, like a TV or fireplace, but this can make a space feel closed off and small. “You need the room to greet you,” says Michael. “If you’re all blocked off and everything is facing a wall, it doesn’t feel open or fresh—it doesn’t work.”

3. Flood the space with light.

Not only is a dark room uninviting—it also makes for a poor-quality picture. Bring in as much natural light as possible by opening curtains and blinds, and try to shoot on sunny days. Supplement with artificial light as needed.

4. Clear the clutter.

What’s one element all the #homestagrams have in common? Every piece of décor looks intentional, creating a tidy aesthetic. Remove any miscellaneous papers, remote controls, and cords from the shot, and “have a purpose for your accessories,” says Michael.

5. Create a focal point.

Hang a statement-making piece of artwork to draw the eye and tie the whole photo together. If you’re working with a particularly small space, a mirror can also be an effective focal point to make the room appear larger.

6. Layer up.

Layering with throw pillow and blankets will transform your couch into a piece of furniture that looks professionally styled. Don’t be afraid to mix and match textures and patterns—leather with faux fur, or solids with animal prints, for example—to add depth.

7. Bring in some life.

You rarely see people in home photos on Instagram, but you can still add liveliness to your spaces by incorporating a plant for a fresh breath of color, texture, and movement.

8. Gather outside sources of inspiration.

Don’t be influenced solely by your own taste, says Michael. Use outside sources of inspiration to discover new, unique styles. “You want to think, ‘What do I see in magazines? What do I see on TV? What do I see on Pinterest?’ You want to know what people are looking at and liking.”

When it comes to home maintenance, you should abide by the one to four percent rule . This rule states you should spend between one and four percent of your home’s value each year on repairs and maintenance.

Below we’ve included some helpful and actionable home maintenance tips to keep your home in tip-top shape for as long as possible. Regardless of if you build or buy , keeping your home properly maintained is a must.

The Roof

One of the most important parts of your home that you need to maintain regularly is the roof. You should make sure to check for damages, look for discolored or gravel-less shingles, missing shingles, wet-areas, and any other part of the roof that appears unusual.

If you don’t notice problems with your roof and take care of them as early as possible, it may result in leaks inside your home. And roof leaks can add up to some very costly repairs and unwanted mold and moisture in your home.

Make sure that you pay close attention to the areas around your vents, chimneys, and skylights as well.

These are the areas of your roof that are most likely to develop leaks.

The Shower

Believe it or not, your shower also needs some love and attention on a regular basis. Take some time to look at the pipe coming off your shower wall (where your shower head is attached).

This is one of the most common areas where issues can occur with any shower. It may become loose over time or corrode without anyone noticing. When this goes unchecked you could be in for some costly repairs, however, fixing it is a breeze.

Fixes in this part of your shower may be as simple as sealing up any areas that could allow cold air or moisture to spread or a quick replacement of a showerhead. If you need, your local handyman can help you accomplish these repairs fairly quick.

The Gutters

Your rain gutters and downspouts are a very important part of your home. When they’re working properly you probably don’t even thinking about them.

Your home’s gutters are the first line of defense that will protect your home’s siding and foundation from the elements.

But if your gutters aren’t doing their job properly, it may result in a flooded crawl space or basement. One of the main reasons water accumulates in basements is due to malfunctioning gutters.

If you want to keep your basement dry, then you need to clean your gutters and remove the debris. Try not to use gutter guards, as these don’t do that good of a job blocking the debris, and they make it more difficult to clean the gutters out.

In addition to cleaning the gutters, be sure they are properly attached to the fascia boards and then replace the gutters that have started to leak.

The Windows

Do your windows skip, stick and stutter when you try to open them to let a bit of fresh air inside? If so, this is a problem and one that needs to be addressed.

Also, if you try to force your windows open when they are sticky, it can stress the window and result in damage. The next time you feel any resistance when trying to open your window, spray a bit of silicone lubricant on a rag and then apply a light coat to the guides.

This is a trick that works well on wood, metal, and vinyl windows.

The Toilet

If you have ever had to deal with a leaky toilet, then you know the struggle that goes along with it. A toilet tank that leaks won’t just affect your utility bill, but it may also cause water damage in your bathroom, as well as premature wear of the internal components of your toilet.

If you don’t know if you have a leaky toilet, there’s a simple test. Just add a little food coloring into the tank (a couple of drops should be plenty). Be sure to use a bright color such as blue or red.

Leave the dye in the tank for an hour, and then come back to see if there is any color in the bowl. If the dye is present in the bowl, there’s a leak.

If this is the case, the flapper is going to have to be changed. You can do this yourself or call your local plumber for help.

The Walls

It doesn’t matter how careful you are, your walls are eventually going to get a few holes in them. From hanging up picture and mirrors to careless kids, and curious pets, holes happen.

Even if you have camouflaged all the holes, if you are ready to change things up, they may be easy to see. The good news is, this is an easy fix.

All you need is some spackle and a bit of time. Applying spackle to cover the holes is relatively easy and once it’s sanded flush with your wall, can be painted to hide the old holes in the wall!

The HVAC System

When it comes to home maintenance, air conditioners, heat pumps, and other heating and cooling equipment are often the most overlooked appliances. However, it is one of the most expensive to repair.

It’s a good idea to hire an expert heating and cooling professional to perform routine planned maintenance on your home comfort systems. It’s at this time your heating and cooling contractor can also inspect your home’s HVAC system to prepare you for any upcoming problems with the equipment.

Keeping your heating and cooling systems in-check and well maintained will help save you in the long-run. A well-maintained HVAC system can far outlive a system that has been neglected and it should help you be able to budget better for repairs.

Rural Development — U.S. Department of Agriculture (RD)

The USDA has informed(link is external) lenders of a foreclosure and eviction moratorium for all USDA Single Family Housing Guaranteed Loans Program (SFHGLP) loans for a period of 60 days, in connection with the Presidentially declared COVID-19 National Emergency.
RD will continue to provide loans and grants to rural communities across all of their programs.
ReConnect applications will continue to be accepted with a March 31st deadline, and RD will then begin the review and award process.
RD has granted authority to lenders that participate in their Single-Family Housing Guaranteed program so that these lenders can work with borrowers to ensure that homeowners will stay in their houses if they are having difficulty making payments.

Small Business Administration (SBA)

Always Use Odd Numbers

A popular trick designers use to style bookshelves is the arrangement of objects in odd numbers. This is especially useful when grouping picture frames together. As a general rule, three is the magic number. To achieve the perfect look, stick with one large, one medium and one small frame, then alternate orientations from vertical to horizontal.

Hang Artwork From Shelves

In light of COVID-19, we thought we would share CDC recommendations for US households when it comes to cleaning and disinfecting!

Background

There is much to learn about the novel coronavirus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Based on what is currently known about the novel coronavirus and similar coronaviruses that cause SARS and MERS, spread from person-to-person with these viruses happens most frequently among close contacts (within about 6 feet). This type of transmission occurs via respiratory droplets. On the other hand, transmission of novel coronavirus to persons from surfaces contaminated with the virus has not been documented. Transmission of coronavirus occurs much more commonly through respiratory droplets than through fomites. Current evidence suggests that novel coronavirus may remain viable for hours to days on surfaces made from a variety of materials. Cleaning of visibly dirty surfaces followed by disinfection is a best practice measure for prevention of COVID-19 and other viral respiratory illnesses in households and community settings.

Purpose

This guidance provides recommendations on the cleaning and disinfection of households where persons under investigation (PUI) or those with confirmed COVID-19 reside or may be in self-isolation. It is aimed at limiting the survival of the virus in the environments. These recommendations will be updated if additional information becomes available.

These guidelines are focused on household settings and are meant for the general public.

Cleaning refers to the removal of germs, dirt, and impurities from surfaces. Cleaning does not kill germs, but by removing them, it lowers their numbers and the risk of spreading infection.
Disinfecting refers to using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces. This process does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or remove germs, but by killing germs on a surface after cleaning, it can further lower the risk of spreading infection.

General Recommendations for Routine Cleaning and Disinfection of Households

Community members can practice routine cleaning of frequently touched surfaces (for example: tables, doorknobs, light switches, handles, desks, toilets, faucets, sinks) with household cleaners and EPA-registered disinfectants that are appropriate for the surface, following label instructions. Labels contain instructions for safe and effective use of the cleaning product including precautions you should take when applying the product, such as wearing gloves and making sure you have good ventilation during use of the product.

General Recommendations for Cleaning and Disinfection of Households with People Isolated in Home Care (e.g. Suspected/Confirmed to have COVID-19)

Household members should educate themselves about COVID-19 symptoms and preventing the spread of COVID-19 in homes.
Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces daily in household common areas (e.g. tables, hard-backed chairs, doorknobs, light switches, remotes, handles, desks, toilets, sinks)
- In the bedroom/bathroom dedicated for an ill person: consider reducing cleaning frequency to as-needed (e.g., soiled items and surfaces) to avoid unnecessary contact with the ill person.
  - As much as possible, an ill person should stay in a specific room and away from other people in their home, following home care guidance .
  - The caregiver can provide personal cleaning supplies for an ill person’s room and bathroom, unless the room is occupied by child or another person for whom such supplies would not be appropriate. These supplies include tissues, paper towels, cleaners and EPA-registered disinfectants (examples at this linkpdf iconexternal icon ).
  - If a separate bathroom is not available, the bathroom should be cleaned and disinfected after each use by an ill person. If this is not possible, the caregiver should wait as long as practical after use by an ill person to clean and disinfect the high-touch surfaces.
Household members should follow home care guidance when interacting with persons with suspected/confirmed COVID-19 and their isolation rooms/bathrooms.

How to clean and disinfect:

Surfaces

Wear disposable gloves when cleaning and disinfecting surfaces. Gloves should be discarded after each cleaning. If reusable gloves are used, those gloves should be dedicated for cleaning and disinfection of surfaces for COVID-19 and should not be used for other purposes. Consult the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and disinfection products used. Clean hands immediately after gloves are removed.
If surfaces are dirty, they should be cleaned using a detergent or soap and water prior to disinfection.
For disinfection, diluted household bleach solutions, alcohol solutions with at least 70% alcohol, and most common EPA-registered household disinfectants should be effective.
- Diluted household bleach solutions can be used if appropriate for the surface. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for application and proper ventilation. Check to ensure the product is not past its expiration date. Never mix household bleach with ammonia or any other cleanser. Unexpired household bleach will be effective against coronaviruses when properly diluted.
  - Prepare a bleach solution by mixing:
    - 5 tablespoons (1/3rd cup) bleach per gallon of water or
    - 4 teaspoons bleach per quart of water

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for all cleaning and disinfection products (e.g., concentration, application method and contact time, etc.).

Clean hands immediately after gloves are removed.
- If no gloves are used when handling dirty laundry, be sure to wash hands afterwards.
- If possible, do not shake dirty laundry. This will minimize the possibility of dispersing virus through the air.
- Launder items as appropriate in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. If possible, launder items using the warmest appropriate water setting for the items and dry items completely. Dirty laundry from an ill person can be washed with other people’s items.
- Clean and disinfect clothes hampers according to guidance above for surfaces. If possible, consider placing a bag liner that is either disposable (can be thrown away) or can be laundered.

Hand hygiene and other preventive measures

Household members should clean hands often, including immediately after removing gloves and after contact with an ill person, by washing hands with soap and water for 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available and hands are not visibly dirty, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol may be used. However, if hands are visibly dirty, always wash hands with soap and water.
Household members should follow normal preventive actions while at work and home including recommended hand hygiene and avoiding touching eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
- Additional key times to clean hands include:
  - After blowing one’s nose, coughing, or sneezing
  - After using the restroom
  - Before eating or preparing food
  - After contact with animals or pets
  - Before and after providing routine care for another person who needs assistance (e.g. a child)

Other considerations

The ill person should eat/be fed in their room if possible. Non-disposable food service items used should be handled with gloves and washed with hot water or in a dishwasher. Clean hands after handling used food service items.
If possible, dedicate a lined trash can for the ill person. Use gloves when removing garbage bags, handling, and disposing of trash. Wash hands after handling or disposing of trash.
Consider consulting with your local health department about trash disposal guidance if available.

That also goes for free nights in a hotel, free meals, or any other free add-on that you didn’t specifically coordinate.

Use a Credit Card : As much as you can, pay using a credit card instead of cash or check. Doing so gives you more protection in case you don’t get what you paid for. Often times, the credit card company will work on your behalf to fight the charge or rectify the situation.

Ask for Recommendations : Use personal recommendations from friends and family to decide which companies to work with. There’s no better way to ensure that a travel company is trustworthy than if you know someone who has used them and can vouch for their service. They’ll also be able to give you a heads up about any additional fees or alterations from the initial offer.

Do Your Research : Research the companies you book your travel with. If you’re using a travel company, look for online reviews or ask friends and family. See if any negative reviews come up and how the company responded to them. Also, make sure you actually read all the contracts you sign with the company as there will likely be language in there that explains what happens in the event of delayed or canceled flights, problems with the trip, etc. If you don’t see those questions answered, ask them.

Don't Feel Pressured : If someone is pressuring you to fork over your credit card information, to give up personal information, or to sign up for some kind of club or special offer, don’t do it. A reputable company doesn’t have to force you to buy their service. At the first sign that you feel uncomfortable, it’s entirely your right to walk away, hang up the phone, or close the website. You can always come back later after verifying the offer is legitimate.

Research the Costs

Whether you’re taking a budget vacation or a luxurious trip around the world, it’s never a bad idea to be aware of the costs that lie ahead. The last thing you want is to get surprised with an expense you didn't prepare for, which can derail a great trip very quickly.

Costs May Vary : Don’t assume that just because things cost a certain amount where you live that’s also the case wherever you’re traveling. That’s especially true if you’re traveling internationally. The bad news for active adult travelers is that you’re probably going to pay a little bit more than most for travel insurance. While specifics vary based on the insurance you get, the point is to protect yourself against unforeseen travel issues and mishaps. They include trip cancellations, trip interruptions, lost baggage, and medical emergencies.

That last one is what makes it such a good idea for active adults as many U.S.-based medical insurances don’t work if you’re going overseas. You’ll have to check to make sure your travel insurance covers pre-existing conditions. Also, make sure you do your research on the policy’s evacuation insurance, which will cover expenses in case of an emergency. It’s extremely helpful to have in situations when you’re too sick to fly on a commercial airline.

A good rule of thumb is that travel insurance should cost around five percent of your total trip cost and the emergency medical coverage should at least be in the $10,000-$50,000 range.

We’re not talking about credit cards with good miles programs because you would have used that already. We’re talking about best practices for credit cards during your trip, which is especially critical when traveling abroad.

Keep It Simple : When it comes to credit cards, keep it simple and use common sense. A widely accepted card like Visa and Mastercard is smarter than a smaller or niche brand. And, if possible, travel with more than one credit card just in case you run into an unforeseen issue with balances or declines. Plus, there’s no reason not to think strategically and earn points for your next trip while on this one.

Check Your Card's Travel Protections : Make sure you research any travel protections that come with your credit card. Not every card offers them, but certain ones have built-in protection to make up for flight delays, trip cancellations, lost baggage, and accidents.

Notify the Card Company of Your Travels : Make sure you alert your credit card issuers that you're traveling, especially if you’re leaving the country. If charges from across the country or globe start showing up on your account, they might start declining them on principle. These days, there's often an option online that allows you to alert your credit cards and bank about travel plans.

Set Some Money Aside

You’ve figured out how much you’ll be spending and what you’ll be doing. Now one of the best things you can do is create a “travel fund” before you go. You don’t have to save much, but every little bit helps. Even if all it does is pay for a few meals, it feels like “found money” when you actually use it. The easiest way to do this is to open a savings account (watch for minimum balance requirements), set up automatic transfers based on a schedule, and don’t touch it until the vacation is here. Of course, you can also just start a change jar in your house if you want to keep things low-key.

There are also a lot of good apps out there that can help you budget before a big trip. Check out Mint , YNAB , and Digit as potential resources to help you set aside what you need without requiring you to do all the heavy lifting.

Plan Your Activities

You’ve picked out your destinations and figured out how to maximize your money. Before it’s time to take your trip, you’ll want to really make sure you’ve buttoned up your itinerary. Make sure the activities you’re going to do match up with the budget you’ve created. If any adjustments are needed, either to your savings or to the itinerary, now is the time to make them. This way, it’s fresh in your mind how the financial situation shapes up.

It’s also a good time to double-check your plans and make sure you’re making any necessary reservations or tour bookings beforehand.

Check Your Documents

If you’re traveling within the United States, you don’t need to worry too much beyond carrying the usual documentation (driver’s license, ID cards). However, if you’re leaving the country to travel abroad, be it China or Canada, you’re going to want to make sure you’ve got the proper documents in order.

First and foremost, if you don’t have a U.S. passport, you better get one. They cost $135 ($110 to renew) and they're good for 10 years. Processing times vary, but you should give yourself at least two months beforehand to make sure you get a new passport. However, if you’ve left it too long, you can pay a $60 expediting fee (plus overnight shipping) to get it within three weeks.

If your passport is going to expire within a few months, you might want to go ahead and get that renewal beforehand. Many countries require that your passport be valid for at least three months after your return to America.

If you’re traveling in North America or most of Europe, your passport will be good. However, double-check what every country’s documentation requirements are because they might ask for more. For example, the Czech Republic and Poland require visitors to have proof of medical insurance (though it’s unlikely they'll actually check this).

Automate Your Bills and Subscriptions

While you’re doing so much planning about what will happen on your trip, don’t forget to do some planning for what happens while you’re gone. Depending on the length of your trip, you’ll want to make sure that various bills and monthly charges are paid, either by pre-paying or automating payment. If there are ongoing or weekly services that you won’t need while gone, make sure you cancel them.

You should also let the post office know that you won’t be home and that they should hold your mail until you get back. Otherwise, your mailbox will get overloaded and it could draw attention to your absence.

Pack Well

Packing might be something you do last minute by shoving everything into a suitcase, but there are some pretty simple ways to make life easier for yourself.

Make a packing list. This will help you identify items to pack that you might not have thought about.

Roll, don’t fold. Tightly rolled clothing takes up less space than folded clothing. It might not seem like it, but it’s true.

Pack your socks into your shoes. Why waste that extra space?

Separate in-flight essentials. Anything you’ll need easy access to should be in a pouch or small bag.

Pack food storage bags to store food, jewelry, and wet swimwear.

Bring half of what you initially pack. If you’re looking for ways to cut down bag weight, this handy tip makes you really think about what's essential.

Learn the 3-1-1- rule . Modern travel means dealing with TSA’s rules about what you can take on flights. Knowing the rules will inform how you pack toiletries.

Know your airlines’ baggage rules. Don’t risk a $50 or even a $100 fee for oversized baggage. Confirm how many bags you’re allowed to check for free and figure out if the extra bag fees are worth it.

If you have lived in Central Iowa for even a minute, you are well aware of the rivalry between the Iowa State Cyclones and the Iowa Hawkeyes. The question is - who does your household support, or are you a house divided?

To be an Iowan is to be many things: kindhearted and welcoming; hardworking; family-oriented. But if you are truly an Iowan, you will either bleed cardinal or you will bleed gold. The choice is yours.

Every year for the last three decades the entire state of Iowa watches one of the biggest college football rivalry games: Iowa State University and the University of Iowa. Each year the teams work hard to earn the coveted Cy-Hawk Trophy. This year people are really looking forward to the game considering ESPN's "College GameDay" picked Ames for its Saturday morning destination. An added element of excitement to be sure.

The Iowa State Fair is an International acclaimed event that takes place in Iowa’s capital each year. It is the single largest event in Iowa and one of the largest and well-known state fairs in the United States. The fair boasts nearly 200 food stands, as well as a range of live and free entertainment, rides, pageants and more.

Painting or papering the walls of your home is one of the simplest, most cost-effective changes to make when you’re craving a refresh of your spaces. And thanks to new techniques, materials, and designs, you are only limited by your imagination—or the height of your walls. “Now is the time to express yourself,” says Kathy Basil of Hirshfield’s. “There has never been a better variety.” Here, the manager of the Minneapolis family-owned design shop talks top trends that will add “wow” to your walls.

Statement papers.

While you may not want to deck your entire living room in large-scale, multicolored florals (a very trendy print right now, by the way), smaller spaces—like a powder room or vestibule—are ideal for experimenting with statement wallpaper that packs a visual punch. “I like my statement papers not to be overwhelming,” says Basil. “It all comes down to, how do you want this space to feel?”

Performance wallcoverings.

Materials like grasscloth and sisal have long been admired for their natural, organic look, but because they don’t hold up well to humidity and moisture, they haven’t always been the most practical decorative option. That’s started to change within the past year with the introduction of performance wallcoverings that are not only durable but also aesthetically pleasing. “They look so real and they perform,” says Basil. “You could put them in a mudroom, and your kids can bang their backpacks or hockey sticks or whatever into them, and they don’t do anything.”

Murals.

Whether it’s a scenic landscape that recalls a favorite vacation or a bold geometric design that encapsulates your personality, murals offer an alternative to traditional paint and paper. “A mural is a really good thing for an accent wall,” says Basil.

Color blocking.

Create a feature wall in your home by painting it a different color than the surrounding walls, a technique known as color blocking. “It’s about contrast. Don’t just hop up two spots on the paint strip,” says Basil, noting that the color should complement your other décor. “If you have a pillow you love on your sofa, it can come from that pillow. It can be coral. It can be teal. It could be a great charcoal. It just needs to come from somewhere.”

Painted woodwork.

Skip the stain—classic woodwork takes on new life when painted. “I’m not saying just go through your whole house and paint all your woodwork green,” says Basil, “but if you have a sunroom, or if you have a room off on its own that needs a little personality, [painted woodwork] looks so good.”

Decorative ceilings.

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is painting or papering the walls, and then leaving the ceiling blank. “You don’t know it until you compare it side by side,” says Basil. “If you do this great paper and leave your ceiling white, it just looks so unfinished.” She suggests a patterned paper, or a high-gloss or metallic paint that draws the eye upward—but don’t feel like you have to do this in every space. Another way to achieve a cohesive, finished look is by painting the ceiling the same color as the room’s window trim, baseboards, and crown molding.

Tour your local firehouse . Call ahead to make arrangements; ask if your grandchild will be allowed to climb on a fire truck or sit inside and steer.

Collect seashells at the beach. Later, paint them using watercolors and give them out as favors at the next family dinner.

Ride a roller coaster . See who can scream the loudest.

Make up a story , taking turns one sentence at a time. You start the story, then your grandchild continues it, you take over again, then he does, until you have an ending.

Let your grandchild bury you in the sand .

All of your ice cream dreams are about to come true with the soon-to-be-open second location of The Outside Scoop in Prairie Trail!

Located in Indianola, The Outside Scoop has become an increasingly popular destination for ice-cream fanatics everywhere! Soon this summer, their second location will see its completion and officially be open for business in Ankeny's Prairie Trail development.

The store is known for their artisan style batches of ice cream that are hand packed and full of robust flavor. They strive for the best, using the freshest products out there. And since opening in 2010, they've only continued to grow in popularity.

General manager Haylee Korth said the new store will look similar to the original Indianola shop, offering the same rotation of homemade ice cream flavors, sundaes, shakes, malts and blended frozen treats.

According to The Des Moines Register, Korth said that, "Based on sales in the last couple of years and customer feedback, we felt it was important for us to keep growing. There's nothing quite like our product in Ankeny."

Their menu features approximately 80 flavors of ice cream served on a rotating basis, with names like "Butterscotch Smore," "Lucky Charms," "Cinnamon Roll," "Dark Chocolate Raspberry" and so many others. The Indianola shop features 24 flavors at any given time, including a dairy-free option. The Outside Scoop also has two trucks that travel around the Des Moines metro with a similar variety on a smaller scale.

Pickleball: Fastest Growing Sport – Especially for Seniors

Learn more about one of the most popular ways to stay healthy while having fun - playing a game called pickleball!

Regular readers of Healthy Aging know the benefits of exercise. We won’t repeat them here, but will remind you that exercise, eating properly and seeing your physician regularly are the three keys to healthy aging.

The hardest thing about exercise is doing it regularly. There are thousands of excuses for not exercising and we all use one or more too often. One of the reasons often given not to exercise is it isn’t fun (think swimming laps, jogging around a track or on a treadmill.)

However, this is where pickleball comes in. Of all the racket sports (tennis, squash, ping-pong and badminton) the pickleball devotees who have played other sports claim it is the most fun. This, no doubt, is debatable, but there are some things about pickleball that are undebatable.

First, pickleball has an odd name. It is derived from the sport of rowing where the slowest craft is the “pickle boat.” The sport was invented outside Seattle in 1965 and has grown steadily since that time to become an international sport with thousands of regular players. Compared to tennis, for example, this is a slow sport.

Another asset the sport has is that the court (44 by 20 feet) is much smaller than a tennis court and this means it is easier to keep the ball in play. The fact that the ball stays in play longer by definition means that you will get a good bit of exercise in each of the 11-point games. However, the smaller court, when two people play on each side (doubles), means that most points do not require too much movement – about two to four steps. Thus the small court keeps the ball in play, but you are not over exerted during any one point.

The smaller court also means less running and less wear and tear on knees, hips, ankles – our joints. For people who have problems with these joints, but still want a racket sport to be active, then pickleball is a very good choice.

A third fact is that the ball is a soft, light object that keeps the game from being too fast for those of us with slowing reflexes. The ball is a plastic whiffle ball-like object that cannot be hit so hard that it could cause injury if inadvertently striking you or another player. It does take some adjustment to the bounce, but practice takes care of that quickly.

The paddle doesn’t have strings and with the soft ball makes this a low intensity instrument with minimal stress on the tendons and muscles of the arms. Added to this is the fact that serving is underhand (not the overhand throwing motion of the tennis serve). This makes the game easier to play and less taxing on the arm. The rackets also range in price, on average, between $75 and $100 and balls about $2 so this is not an expensive sport to get into.

The final relatively unique feature of pickleball is that you do not have to be the world’s most gifted athlete to play and enjoy it. Unlike tennis, for example, pickleball can be learned and played at a reasonable level quickly by almost anyone. You will see people of all ages, all physiognomy, and all athletic ability out on the courts having fun playing.

Some of the attractions of pickleball, but not unique to it, are the social aspects. Playing with one opponent (singles) or two (doubles) allows you to interact with the opponent and teammate and enjoy the exercise that all are having.

Playing pickleball and other racket sports helps with hand-eye coordination. This is something that as we age is important, since it is required for many daily activities like eating or driving. These exercises also help with balance which is under threat with age, but essential to maintain to help avoid falls. The caloric burn of pickleball for those who are trying to lose weight with exercise is somewhere between badminton and tennis.

Racket sports boost the cardiovascular system which helps prevent many of the unwanted problems of older age like hypertension, stroke and heart attack. Pickleball gives you a good aerobic workout without as much stress and strain on joints and muscles, as mentioned above.

The endorphins and other bioamines that are released with all exercise are useful in elevating self-esteem and combating depression – both problems that can come with older age.

Who is playing this sport? You guessed it: the group that seems to have become regular players are baby boomers. The senior age group has been attracted to the sport because it is easy to play, very social and less stressful on muscles, tendons and joints. A very committed group are the former tennis players who for physical reasons can no longer play that game – but many non-racket sport players have also joined the pickleballers. Try it you might like it.

Most people have heard of Tai Chi or seen people on video or in parks moving slowly and gracefully, and have wondered what it is, or how it works.

Tai Chi (also known as Taiji Quan) is known as one of the best methods for unifying body, mind and spirit. Originally developed as a martial art for self-defense, Tai Chi is now practiced by 100’s of millions of people worldwide, mostly for health and wellness, though many people still practice for self-defense.

The health benefits of Tai Chi have been widely publicized, especially when it comes to improving posture, balance and preventing falls for seniors. Indeed, a quick Google search on the topic comes up with over ten million results.

Dr. Peter Wayne of the Harvard Medical School calls it the “perfect exercise” or the “perfect medication.” And the American Heart Association, the Arthritis Foundation, the Mayo Clinic, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the National Institute of Health all recommend Tai Chi for its many health benefits.

But…what the articles don’t often talk about is what it’s like to start or practice Tai Chi, or how much fun it is, or how good it feels!

Best Perennials for Growing in Containers

Growing in a confined container is not an ideal condition for any plant, but properly cared for perennials can thrive quite nicely in a container. Typically they just may not grow as large as they would when grown in the ground.

When creating a container garden with perennials you will first consider the same things for planting any garden: sun, shade, water and wind exposure. Soil must still be considered since you will be planting in a light, water retentive medium with good drainage and not every perennial will like that environment. However the perennials that prefer poor soil with low nutrient levels may still do well if you care for them (or should I say not care for them) properly. Remember to select plants with the same or very similar requirements for each container. To keep your container interesting, select perennials with long bloom times and include spring, summer and fall blooming plants.

To design an interesting container garden, also try to include thrillers (tall primary plant), fillers (at least a couple lower growing plants with complimenting foliage or blooms), and spillers (low growing creepers or vining plants). Add some annuals or foliage plants for season long interest. Or you might prefer a container full and overflowing with just one lovely plant, which can often make a big impact.

Your container should also be well balanced in height versus width or middle “bulk”. Using a tall central plant you can balance the arrangement with fuller medium height plants and low plants that spill over the edge. Don’t forget that a large heavy container also adds visual weight to your arrangement. As with any design principle, throwing out all the rules and planting a container completely out of balance can create a very simple and striking centerpiece. As always, do what YOU love!

What to consider when selecting perennials for containers:

Perennials typically will not grow to full size in a container because their roots are restricted. Larger perennials may only reach about half the normal size.
Compact or dwarf varieties of large perennials are best for containers.
Perennials with a spreading form may overtake other plants in the container and eventually outgrow the container.
Vining plants can be grown on a pillar frame inserted into the container or allowed to spill over the sides.
Shade containers will rely heavily on foliage for interest. Choose colorful, variegated or heavily textured leaves.
Remember that perennials usually need two seasons to reach their size and flowering potential. But since they don’t grow as vigorously in a container, plant your container fairly full but give each perennial a bit of space to fill out. Perennials that reach 12” wide normally should be planted 6-9” apart for a very full container in its’ second season. You may want to use a few annuals the first year to give your container that full look.
Plan an overwintering method for containers with plants that are not at least two zones hardier than your growing zone.

Just about any perennial is worth trying in a container, but these are few perennials that seem to do best and will overwinter well if two zones hardier than your growing zone:

Best Perennials for Containers in a Sunny Location

Achillea : Yarrow will grow in just about any conditions. Tall feathery foliage with flat flower clusters in a good color range are a great centerpiece in a container. For best flowering do not fertilize. Hardy to zone 3.

Aster : Asters love moist cool summers and are hardy to zone 4. Make sure they get plenty of sun, feed lightly but regularly and allow for good drainage.

Chrysanthemum: Mums do exceptionally well in containers with plenty of sun and moist soil. They bloom in late summer to frost. Choose a dwarf or compact variety and be careful about hardiness, some are not cold hardy at all.

Coreopsis : There are several species and varieties of coreopsis, all should do well in a container. They prefer a thorough watering weekly. Just take note of mature size and hardiness, some are even annuals.

Cranesbill : Hardy geraniums are perfect to form a mound that spills over a smaller container, or as a lower growing filler plant that will sprawl where it can find room in a larger container. Hardy to zone 5, some are hardy to zone 4.

Delphinium : Delphs can be fussy perennials, but that can be precisely why they can do well in a container if you are diligent about their care. A glazed container will help to retain moisture, choose a generous size. Watering should be consistent, usually every few days to keep the soil moist but not wet. Choose one of the shorter varieties and be sure to check on the feeding and care preferences. Hardy to zone 3.

Dianthus : This enormous family of carnations and pinks offers a broad range of bloom type and color that do very well in containers. Keep the soil evenly moist and feed monthly. Be careful of hardiness, ranging to zone 2, 3 or 4. But some are not cold hardy.

Echinacea : Coneflower has many tough varieties to choose from. Be sure to use a deep container and they will do very well. Bloom colors to pick from is broad.

Gaillardia : Blanket flowers are super tough with daisy like blooms and are hardy to zone 3. Do not overwater, wait for the soil to be quite dry before watering.

Hemerocallis: Daylilies will do well in containers, but the soil must be moist and very well drained. Amend potting soil with just a bit of compost. Most are hardy to zone 3.

Lavendula : Lavender loves to grow in containers. But they like it hot and dry with very well drained soil. Water only when the soil feels dry. Prune lightly in the spring before the plant buds. Choose a dwarf variety. Hardy to zone 5.

Nepata: Catmint are terrific container perennials. They are vigorous growers, tough, drought tolerant and some are hardy to zone 4.

Penstemon : Beard Tongue will do very well in a container with adequate drainage. You may want to add a bit of crushed rock to your potting mix. Deadhead the entire flower stalk when spent.

Primula: Primrose are a perfect spring blooming addition to a container garden. Keep the soil moist and feed monthly. Some are hardy to zone 3, but most only to zone 5.

Rudbeckia : Black-eyed Susans will thrive just about anywhere so they are perfect for containers. They can get quite large so you may prefer a dwarf variety and it will still want a large container. Most are hardy to zone 3, but some are biennial.

Salvia: Perennial sage have a long bloom time and a good range of color. Do not over water and choose a generous container size, they like to spread their roots.. Be careful of size, some can reach 6 feet tall when grown in the ground. Hardy to zone 4.

Sedum : Sedum are fall blooming succulents with interesting foliage. Choose a tall variety for fall blooms and height, or a mounding variety for fillers or a groundcover to spill over the container edge. Make sure your container provides excellent drainage and do not over water. Many Sedum are hardy to zone 2 and will overwinter in most regions with little or not protection.

Best Perennials for a Container in Shade or Part Shade

Astilbe : Graceful and delicate looking astilbe will add wonderful tall and colorful plumes of flowers to a shade container. Most varieties get quite large and will need a large container. Provide good drainage but keep the soil moist with frequent waterings. Hardy to zone 4.

Digitalis: Foxglove offer tall spikes of dense blooms. Since it is a biennial you may not get blooms the first year. Foxglove enjoy the cooler regions and does not tolerate heat well. Keep the soil evenly moist but not wet. Feed monthly. Choose a compact variety, some can get well over 3 feet tall. Hardy to zone 4.

Heuchera : Coral Bell varieties are vast, some like more shade and some more sun. In addition to spring blooms, Coral Bells offer very interesting and colorful foliage to a shade container. Make sure you have excellent drainage and do not over water. Hardy to zone 4.

Hellebore: Hellebores will kick off blooming very early in your perennial containers. Choose a deep pot for long roots. Hardy to zone 4.

Hosta: The vast range of leaf shape and color available in hosta varieties can add interesting foliage to your container. Most prefer moist soil and dappled shade but some can tolerate wider ranges of conditions. However you do not want the soil to be wet, make sure drainage is good. Most are very hardy, to zone 2 or 3.

Anyone who wants to tidy up their home can use the KonMari Method, but it can be especially useful for active adults who want to downsize into new homes or move forward with retirement plans. The KonMari Method guides homeowners to only keep the possessions they truly love, which leads to a smaller and more meaningful collection of items that can fit in a new home with ease.

We’re breaking down the KonMari Method step-by-step so you can downsize your home and transition into retirement with happiness.

Downsizing with The KonMari Method

You might keep a few outfits for any trips back to the area, but you will get the most use out of clothes that fit the weather of your new active adult community. For books, it may be best to just keep your favorites and make room for new reads on your shelves. Large book collections are often difficult to move, so it might be worth saving yourself the trouble and checking out the local library once you reach your destination. When it comes to papers, get rid of any unnecessary papers that have already served their purposes for you. Make sure to shred any documents with personal information. The miscellaneous category includes pantry items, board games, linens, and garage storage, among other areas in your home.

The final category, sentimental items, can include the possessions most difficult get rid of. Marie Kondo reminds homeowners that even if you dispose of sentimental items, you will still have your memories. When sentimental items no longer spark joy, it’s okay to dispose of those items while thanking them for the joy they brought at one time.

Rule 5: Follow the Right Order

The KonMari Method emphasizes the order of the categories: clothes, books, papers, miscellaneous, and sentimental. Marie Kondo intentionally placed these items in order from least sentimental to most sentimental. As you achieve tidying success in the first categories, it can help you build confidence to move through the final one.

Rule 6: Ask Yourself if it Sparks Joy

The final rule of the KonMari Method is to always ask yourself, for each item, if it sparks joy. This simple phrase helps homeowners change their mindset about their possessions and their lifestyle.

“Sparking joy” is a foundational concept in the KonMari Method. When you hold each item in your hands, you ask yourself, “Does this spark joy?” If it does, you keep it. If it does not, you discard it. Then, when you are done sorting, you are left only with the belongings you truly love. With the burden of clutter and disorganization gone, you will have more time to enjoy your new home and the lifestyle at your active adult community.

How to Protect Your Home During Extreme Cold Weather

Even with the best of homes, extreme cold weather can be hard on both you and your home. Here are some tips to put into practice when freezing weather, snow, and ice hit your area.

How to Deal with Frozen Pipes

Disconnect and drain garden hoses.
Cover outside faucets with insulating foam covers.
Turn off water to outside faucets, if available, and open valves on faucets to allow them to drain.
Turn off sprinkler system and blow compressed air through the lines to drain them.
Close or cover foundation vents under house and windows to basements.
Close garage doors.
Close or cover foundation vents under house and windows to basements.
Close garage doors.
Insulate exposed pipes (both hot and cold) under house with foam pipe insulation.
Open cabinet doors under sinks.
Drip hot and cold faucets in kitchen and bath. Drip single control faucets with lever set in middle.
Set icemaker to make ice if the water line to it runs under the house.
Don’t forget to check on pipes to your washing machine in the laundry room
Locate water main cut-off valve, and have a cut-off key handy.
Use a hair dryer, heat lamp, electric heat tape, or a portable space heater to thaw frozen pipes that have not burst.
Keep the faucet open when thawing frozen pipes to allow water to begin flowing through it.
After the weather has warmed above freezing and any frozen pipes have thawed, turn off dripping faucets and monitor your water meter to check for unseen leaks.

How to Keep Warm in Your Home

Have your furnace inspected before cold weather arrives. Inspect the heat exchanger for cracks, install a clean air filter, and check the thermostat to see if it’s working properly.
Inspect fireplaces, and chimneys before using, and have them cleaned if needed.
Keep drapes and blinds closed, except when windows are in direct sunlight.
Put up storm windows, or install sheet plastic window insulation kits on the inside of windows.
Cover or remove any window air conditioners.
Insulate electrical outlets and switches on exterior walls with foam seals available at home centers.
Caulk any cracks or holes on the outside of your house.
Repair or replace weather stripping and thresholds around doors and windows.
Run paddle ceiling fans on low in reverse (clockwise when looking up) to circulate warm air.
Put draft snakes on window sills, between window frames, and against doors.
If you heat with propane or fuel oil, make sure the tank is full.
If you heat with wood or coal, have plenty of fuel on hand.

How to Protect the Outside of Your Home

Clean your gutters and downspouts before cold weather arrives to prevent ice from forming in them.

Spray an ice repellent solution on steps and walks before freezing weather arrives

Check antifreeze levels in cars. Add if needed, then run the engine to circulate the new antifreeze through the radiator and engine block.

Add freeze resistant windshield wiper fluid, and spay to circulate it in lines.

Check air pressure in tires, since cold weather causes the pressure to lower.

Bring in container plants, add mulch around plants, and cover plants that are prone to frost damage. Remove covering when temperatures warm above freezing.

Drain birdbaths and fountains

Gently sweep snow off plants and shrubs in an upward motion with a broom.

Use rock salt, sand, or clay based kitty litter on walks and drives (NOTE: Salt can damage grass and other plants).

Don’t overdo it when using a snow shovel.

Stay off your roof during freezing weather, but once the ice and snow have melted, inspect your roof for any damage.

How to Stay Safe in an Ice or Snow Storm

Stockpile nonperishable food and water.

Refill prescription medications in advance of storm.

Fill car with gas.

Charge cell phones.

Have flashlights, batteries, a weather radio, and a manual can opener on hand.

A portable generator can come in handy when the lights go out, but take precautions to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning when using.

Make sure you have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and the batteries powering them are fresh.

Have a working fire extinguisher on hand for emergencies.

A chain saw can come in handy for removing broken limbs after an ice storm.

Here are some of the concepts they’ll be incorporating into their new products — ideas you’re sure to love.

Color Me Sophisticated

What began as bright white and gray a couple years ago has been transformed into a softer and more sophisticated palette. You’ll still see lots of white kitchens, but now in vintage white , warming rooms with matte finishes and layered tints that make monochromatic spaces really sing. Chalk and charcoal resurrects the white and gray trend but with softer whites and deeper, charcoal tones.
